Track 13: Digital transformation and innovation in smart cities
The rise of smart territories—regions that leverage digital technologies, data-driven decision-making, and integrated systems to optimize economic, environmental, and social outcomes—has become a key driver of contemporary urban and regional development. As territories across the globe strive to enhance their competitiveness and sustainability, the development of robust business models that support smart territories is crucial. These models must ensure efficient use of resources, foster stakeholder collaboration, and offer scalable and adaptable solutions to the complex challenges of urbanization, digitalization, and climate change. The concept of smart territories extends beyond the traditional understanding of smart cities. It encompasses a wider geographical and socio-economic scale, including rural and peri-urban areas that are part of a holistic, interconnected regional ecosystem. As the notion of smart territories evolves, so too must the business models that support these dynamic environments.
We encourage submissions that cover both theoretical and empirical approaches that explore, but are not limited to, the following topics: business models for smart territories, smart cities, smart tourism, cities as a platform, tourism as a service in cities, innovative financing mechanisms, governance of smart territories, governance and policy frameworks, technology integration, smart infrastructure and services, data-driven decision making, challenges and barriers, etc.
Keywords: Smart territories, Smart cities, Smart tourism, Digitalization, Smart governance
