Track 9: AI for sustainability

AI, like any other technology, is not a panacea for complex sustainability issues. Although AI can provide significant insights and innovations in areas like climate change, biodiversity, and energy efficiency, it is essential to recognize its effective potential, sometimes negative. AI systems, especially machine learning models, require vast amounts of computational resources and energy, contributing to carbon emissions. Moreover, AI can sometimes amplify unsustainable practices if applied without proper
guidelines. Most responsibility for the ethical and sustainable deployment of AI falls on firms, making it crucial to investigate how firms can apply AI in a responsible and sustainable manner. Therefore, research should explore how firms can incorporate sustainability into the design, deployment, and use of AI systems.
To argue about the need to research the sustainable effects of AI and its responsible application, particularly by firms, this track proposes to explore how AI can be utilized in a way that aligns with both environmental and societal sustainability goals. We embrace work that propose a thorough examination of its sustainable impact or that includes taking a systems view of AI's interactions with society, understanding the ethical challenges of AI, and integrating design thinking approaches that prioritize user needs and environmental sustainability.
